Chapter 1 - Problems 1.A1, 1.B1 and 1.C1

Viscosities of pure gases and gas mixtures, for a wide range of pressures. For pure gases, nowadays we use correlations based on experimental data at different temperatures, covering pressure ranges from 1 atmosphere, or more properly 1.013 bar, to the critical pressure. However, for a narrow range of low pressures the kinetic theory model is accurate enough.







The whole idea....

The intention of this blog is to have an open and broad discussion about topics related to transport phenomena, everything that is related to: momentum transfer, heat transfer and mass transfer. I believe that the best way to start this open discussion is by reviewing and commenting my collection of the solutions to all problems in the “Transport Phenomena” book published by Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot. In particular the first edition, since my collection was started by mid 1990’s.

It contains not only solutions to the easiest problems, but also the solutions to the difficult ones that require the use of advanced mathematics. I’m also advertising some numerical methods, and the use of common engineering tools, like Microsoft Excel®, MATLAB®, and also some interesting websites, like Wolfram Mathworld, etc.

The following is a disclaimer: the solutions have not undergone rigorous checking nor they are based on the problem solutions manual issued by the authors. The reader should use this collection at his/her own discretion and risk.

I want people from around the world to make comments to improve the quality of this collection, as well to tell me if there are errors or misconceptions in the materials I will be showing on this blog. Everybody is invited, not only chemical engineers, but also mechanical engineers, physicists, chemists, mathematicians, etc. Academicians, professionals and students are very much welcome.
